Mowelfund Museum

Last September 30 we went to Mowelfund museum. Actually it’s my first time to go there. We found out that it is a place wherein you can find replicas of famous characters in the movie before like the “machete”. We also saw the old equipments used in creating films, the costumes as well as the history of film- when did it start, and who are the famous actor and actresses at that time.

My favorite place in the museum is the FPJ room wherein I saw different awards and some replicas of FPJ. My second favorite place is the “walk of fame” wherein I feel like I’m in the Hollywood. The name of the veterans actors before and today are imprinted in a star-shaped.

At the end of our tour, I realize that the industry of film today is slowly fading away, what I mean is every year we only produced two or three films unlike before we can produce a lot of films in just a year. Let’s help the mowelfund in their advocacy which is to promote or to produce quality films and also to help some filmmakers. Image

Eastern Promises

Although it includes scenes that were very brutal it’s still good, knowing that it is an independent film.  It offers a good story line-up, the development of each character through the entire film and even the shots were good.

As I’ve said a while ago this film offers a good story line-up. It includes mystery and puzzle that let the audience to think and feel nervous at the same time.

Another thing that I like about this film is the characters especially Nicolai. Nicolai at the beginning of the story is an antagonist but at the later part of the story he becomes one of the “heroes” in the story.

In the film it clearly shows why Nicolai became like that, a person turn to a stone. Not literally a stone but a person who feels nothing. For him killing is just an ordinary thing to do.

They used also some symbols like the tattoo’s.  In my own interpretation the tattoo’s are sign of strength. Each pain they got was a reminder of how they are strong.

Lastly, the shots were good. It made the feel more even better. The transitions of each scene were good.

Finding the “Silver Linings”

Another book that was brought up to the big screens was the Silver Linings. Silver Linings is a book by Matthew Quick. It is a story of a man named Patrick Solatano who left by his wife named Nicki.

Patrick has a mood disorder. He is a bipolar. Tiffany, on the other hand suffered a lot when her husband died because of an accident. Since, then she commits sex in every man she met to fight the feeling she’s been through. When these two people met, Patrick and Tiffany everything has changed, they both helped each other and eventually find the “Silver Linings”.

Silver linings here is described as the happy ending, hope, or positive thoughts.  I love this film because they solved each other’s problem. It taught me a lot of lessons in life and one thing that I like about this film is how Jennifer Lawrence portrayed the role of tiffany, for me it’s perfect. The emotions are there. I find this film so sweet yet so much inspiring it’s not all about love, it’s about how life goes on.

Here are some of my favorite lines:

“The only way you can beat my crazy was by doing something crazy yourself. Thank you. I love you. I knew it the minute I met you. I’m sorry it took so long for me to catch up. I just got stuck”. – Patrick Solatano

“I was a slut. There will always be a part of me that is dirty and sloppy, but I like that, just like all the other parts of myself. I can forgive. Can you say the same for yourself, fucker? Can you forgive? Are you capable of that?” – Tiffany

“You’re not a standup guy today, Pat!”- Tiffany

“The world will break your heart ten ways to Sunday. That’s guaranteed. I can’t begin to explain that or the craziness inside myself and everyone else. But guess what? Sunday’s my favorite day again. I think of what everyone did for me, and I feel like a very lucky guy”.- Patrick Solatano.

The New Hollywood and Independent Film-making

Image

Because of the advent of television, the industry of film faced a dilemma to the point wherein they produced films that were low- budgeted resulting to a low- quality film. By 1959, what they did was to support the new wave. These young directors helped one another to rise up again the industry and they did.

In 1960’s Hollywood cinema regain its power but it did not lasted for a long time since another problem arose at the middle of it. To surpass this they come-up with an idea of creating films that the target audience were the young ones. “The God Father” by Francis Copolla, “Jaws” by Steven Speilberg, “The Exorcist” of William Friedkin’s   was some of the films that became successful.

These directors called “movie brats”. In my other post “movie brats” are featured in my article. You can see there what kind of directors are these and what are their common themes when they creating films.

In the book of Bordwell and Thompson it stated that the movie brats “produced some personal, high self- conscious films”. These directors were also a great fan of the Classic Hollywood film. It became part of their life. With that, the new Hollywood cinema was somehow based on Classic Hollywood film.

Movie brats at that time became influential in the industry of film. In fact, Lucas and Speilberg became powerful producers. Another thing, these directors open up a new genre in the industry of film.

In the year 1980’s another successful younger director made the industry more popular and interesting. They introduced the “The New New Hollywood”.  Until independent filmmakers shifted into the mainstream making films that not highly cost (medium budget).

Directors from “The New New Hollywood” and the “movie brats” are almost similar when it comes to producing films. They used the traditional classical Hollywood style which is continuity editing, narrative and creative shots.

Studio system and Star system

Image

In a studio system “contract and studio lots” are always present. It is during 1930’s when this kind of system became popular in the industry. “Contracts” means that all the directors, actors, writers, producers, camera men, and even janitor are not allowed to make films in other studio. They even used their own “studio lots” when they are making films for them not to shoot in other locations that may cost them a lot of time and money as well. Today, studios do not apply contracts and studio lots are gone.

Star system on the other hand, prioritizes their actors or the main character. Since they are under contract the studios have the right to do whatever they want to do with them. They trained them physically as well as their acting skills. The main concern here is to make the actor or the main character famous. When you are famous, the tendency is people will support and follow you in everything you do.  Today, as long as you’re beautiful you can be considered as a star.
